ARTIST STATEMENT
The Deconstructed Self Portrait Series expresses my desire to disentangle and expose the masks we create to conceal our emotions or to make ourselves manageable for society. This portrait series illustrates these complicated, layered emotions, which at times can be paralyzing to face. I created abstracted portraits of myself in order to allow the viewers to be able to see themselves in each painting.
While keeping my painting style loose and energetic, I’ve used layers of white gloss house paint as a “mask-like” element to show a contrary reality. My goal is to provoke the viewer for an emotional response.
The Deconstructed Self Portrait Series was created to be engaging to all viewers. We are all complex human beings doing the best we can with what we have, however graceful or thoughtless.
